Women’s Community Leadership Initiative

Leadership Pikes Peak is partnering with Lipscomb Programming LLC to offer the Women’s Community Leadership Initiative class of 2024! Please visit the updated website for program and application information.

THE PROGRAM

Leadership Pikes Peak has served the Pikes Peak region for 45 years through a variety of programs. The Women’s Community Leadership Initiative (WCLI) offers women the chance to unlock their potential to make a difference; through knowing their community better, meeting community leaders and understanding local channels of decision-making, and practicing and refining their own leadership skills.

WCLI is designed for women from low-to-moderate income backgrounds; it is offered from January to June and tuition is free for participants. This year Leadership Pikes Peak has partnered with Lipscomb Programming LLC to continue to offer the WCLI program at no cost to participants.

OBJECTIVES AND GOALS

Leadership of the Self

One of the first steps to leadership development is to understand ourselves – who we are, what we can do, and how we are perceived by others. For leadership to be actualized, we must understand our position in the Pikes Peak community by exploring our individual strengths, personality types, abilities, passions, and potential for personal growth.

Leadership of our Communities

A critical component of leadership development is learning how to apply our abilities to our own personal communities. A personal community is an intimate network of people with whom we align ourselves, and the places, issues, and organizations we rally around in our city.

Leadership of our City

Developing community trustees requires us to know where and how we can make a difference in the greater Pikes Peak community. LPP introduces participants to community leaders and informs them of local challenges. Program graduates will increase their confidence, skills, and abilities to strengthen the city, thus becoming community trustees.

THE EXPERIENCE

In twelve three-hour sessions, the class of women learns the history of the Pikes Peak Region, is exposed to the various sectors in our region, gains knowledge of self-development, and develops leadership skills.  The six-month program begins with sessions on Understanding Yourself and Others, encouraging the class to become aware of their own personality styles and passions.  The community topics covered throughout the program include local history, business and networking, local government, and arts and culture, and more!  The class meets with key leaders and decision-makers from the Pikes Peak Region such as members of the Colorado Springs City Council and Board of El Paso County Commissioners, and leaders from various businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations. Sessions include interactive presentations on community topics, leadership skills development, and time for networking and relationship development between class members and presenters.

In addition to session days, participants complete community service group projects. These projects are proposed by local non-profits who are looking for a woman’s perspective within their organizations. The projects allow participants to practice creative thinking and community stewardship as they apply what they are learning in the WCLI program to a project that makes a lasting impact on our community. This year the class worked with Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance of Colorado Springs, Partners in Housing, and Sue’s Gift.  The participants conclude their experience with a project presentation and graduation.
